Antony Price, Celebrated for Styling Iconic Acts Like Bowie and Duran Duran, Dies at 80.
Fashion legend Antony Price, the visionary British fashion designer who crafted a series of unforgettable images associated with musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has died at 80 years old.
Price was best known for his defined forms and dramatic aesthetics, such as the pastel suits that became famous from the pop-rock group Duran Duran's seminal music video for "their hit Rio".
"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the band released a statement online."
This news arrives less than a month after he debuted his newest line in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. Singer Lily Allen showcased a dress that paid homage to the famous black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" once worn by Diana, Princess of Wales.
A Pioneering Career
Hailing from Yorkshire, where he was born in 1945, Price headed for London at the start of the 1960s to enroll at the esteemed Royal College of Art.
Shortly after his graduation, he began designing clothing for men at the label Stirling Copper and was the creator of the tight, button-detailed trousers that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger famously wore during The Rolling Stones' Gimme Shelter tour in 1969.
He established his eponymous line in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show was launched by creations worn by model Jerry Hall, who also wore the wedding dress Price created for her for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.
Partnerships with Stars
A long-time collaborator of musical chameleon David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the iconic jacket the star wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His trademark skill to blend menswear and womenswear along with his expert craftsmanship in designing sculptural silhouettes established him as a "true original," according to the British Fashion Council.
During the nineties, he started creating ensembles for the then-Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, which included various looks for her tour of the United States after becoming Duchess.
With a vocation that covered half a century, Price held his ultimate fashion presentation in London recently in collaboration with the label 16Arlington.
- Sculpted Silhouettes: Central to his design philosophy.
- Theatrical Flair: Defining an era of music fashion.
- Boundary-Pushing Tailoring: Merging menswear with womenswear.
- A Client List from Rock to Royalty: From David Bowie and Mick Jagger to Queen Camilla.
The fashion world laments the passing to a authentic original whose impact on the visual landscape of music remains indelibly etched.
