Cameroon Political Opposition Leader Confronts Legal Proceedings Regarding Election Unrest, Government Announces

Election Protest in Cameroon
Many in Cameroon are furious over the fact that Paul Biya has won an eighth consecutive term

The nation's Minister of the Interior the interior minister has stated that opposition leader Issa Tchiroma Bakary will undergo legal proceedings over allegations that he provoked "aggressive post-election demonstrations".

A minimum of four protesters have been lost their lives during clashes between police and military and opposition supporters since the electoral process on 12 October, with President Paul Biya, aged 92 securing an eighth term in office.

Issa Tchiroma asserts that he emerged victorious, a claim disputed by Biya's ruling party, the Cameroon People's Democratic Movement (CPDM).

Aggressive responses by police and security officers on protesters have worried the international community, with the UN, African Union and EU calling for caution.

Official's Claims

On Tuesday, Nji charged the opposition figure of coordinating what he referred to as "illegal" demonstrations leading to the fatalities, and also rebuked him for declaring victory in the presidential race.

He noted that the opposition leader's "co-conspirators involved in an subversive plot" will also face legal action.

Vote Outcome

The president, who came to power in the early 80s and is now the world's oldest head of state, obtained the October 12 presidential election with 53.7% of the vote, compared to just over a third for his opponent, according to the electoral authority.

Leader's Stance

Issa Tchiroma is remains silent to the authorities' move to try him, but he had earlier stated that he would not accept a stolen vote - and that he was undaunted of being taken into custody.

When results were announced, he claimed that armed men opened fire on demonstrators gathered near his house in the city of Garoua, causing the death of at least two individuals.

Inquiry Revealed

Recently, the government official disclosed that an investigation would be launched into violent incidents surrounding the announcement of the election results.

"Throughout the violence, some of the criminals were killed," he stated, without giving a exact count of protesters who have been killed in the confrontations.

Nji added that a number of officers of the law enforcement also suffered significant wounds.

Current Situation

While the interior minister maintained the situation across the country was now manageable, protesters are still demonstrating in some parts of the country, especially in Douala and Garoua, where demonstrators set up barricades on Tuesday, and ignited tires on the thoroughfares.

Analysts alert that the post-electoral violence could lead the country into a governmental instability.
