The atmosphere at Lazio's home ground was anything but joyful on Saturday afternoon. Lazio were trailing against Torino, an opponent that had let in 10 goals while managing only two goals in their previous five league matches. Supporters from the Curva Nord were wrapping up their most recent demonstration in an ongoing feud with president Claudio Lotito.
A Season Unraveling?
Was the team's progress coming unstitched, or did there exist a binding element keeping it intact to start with? The club brought back Maurizio Sarri as manager in the summer transfer window, before he publicly stated that the management had omitted to inform him about the transfer ban they were set to be hit with for financial irregularities. Speculation that he might quit were without basis, but he stated that Lotito had "misled" him.
The Biancocelesti became as messy in their performances as off the field, defeating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but falling short in the remaining opening fixtures, which included the capital clash. At any given moment, observers have struggled to ascertain if they're getting better or self-destructing.
Cancellieri's Surprising Comeback
At least one man continued to smile throughout. Matteo Cancellieri had not been expected to be at Lazio this season. He completed last season at Parma as a loanee and, at the start of the off-season, his parent club were attempting to stay there for another season. The registration embargo forced a rethink. The club couldn't risk to thin their squad with no new signings.
He signed initially when Sarri was last in charge, then a 20-year-old product of Verona's academy. He recorded 20 league appearances for Lazio in 2022-23, almost all of those coming off the bench. Their former sporting director, Igli Tare, who left at the end of that season, subsequently claimed Sarri of "promising everyone Cancellieri had superstar potential but then not selecting him."
Uncovering His True Position
It's possible the coach was still trying to work out the nature of Cancellieri's abilities. Originally described as an attacking winger when he joined, Cancellieri nevertheless spent the majority of that term as an unconvincing alternative to Ciro Immobile in the striker role. During 63 outings on loan at Empoli and Parma during recent campaigns, he scored seven times. Shoehorn
