Igor Jesus scored twice as Nottingham Forest concluded the league phase of the European competition with a comfortable triumph against Ferencvaros at the home stadium.

Forest had already secured a berth in the knockout round play-offs and went into this fixture with a slim possibility of reaching the top eight, even though they needed several results to fall in their favor.

That did not happen but this assured performance will give the supporters confidence that their side can come through the home-and-away tie to advance to the last 16.

A Ferencvaros midfielder struck the upright with a headed effort inside the first 10 minutes for the visitors – coached by ex-Premier League forward Robbie Keane – but it was all Forest from that point forward.

Forest opened the scoring in the early stages when a delivery from midfield was turned into his own net by the defender and doubled the lead four minutes later – Jesus firing an effort in at the back post for his 10th goal of the season.

The forward's eleventh goal arrived early in the second half when he timed a run perfectly to escape the defence and then place a shot past the shot-stopper.

That goal killed off Ferencvaros' hopes of mounting a recovery and instead Forest added a fourth when the impressive James McAtee scored from a spot-kick after a foul by the unfortunate Bence Otvos inside the box on Dan Ndoye.

The Europa League knockout phase play-off draw is scheduled on Friday, 30 January (midday UK time), where Forest might face either Fenerbahce or Panathinaikos.

"It's more than the scoreline, there was that feel about it. I want these guys to do well as a unit, the entire team," said Forest boss Sean Dyche.

"This is another stride forward, but it is a good step."

Forest Analysis: Jesus Catches Eye as Recent Arrival Watches On

Igor Jesus has been a standout performer for Forest in European competition this term with half of his eleven strikes scored in the tournament.

His brace also means he has scored a trio of strikes in his last two games and the prospect of a challenge for his place in the forward line could be spurring him on.

Italian forward Lorenzo Lucca was last week signed on loan and he was watching this game from the stands.

This development may well have been on Jesus' thoughts as he was impressive against Ferencvaros, producing two superb goals and overall being a constant threat to the visitors' defence with his speed and movement.

The forward was not the only one in catching the eye, with James McAtee producing his best performance in a Nottingham Forest shirt since joining from the champions last summer, while Dan Ndoye also impressed.

These encouraging performances will give Forest some renewed optimism as they switch focus to pulling further away from the Premier League relegation zone when they welcome their London rivals on Sunday.

"The minimum requirement is a response," added Dyche.

"I've never questioned their work ethic or their dedication or honesty. It is just go and show your quality.

"James was very good and Dan was super sharp. Jesus got another couple and these are good signs."
