Israeli citizens mark second remembrance of 7 October incident as Palestinian peace negotiations proceed
Citizens have come together across the country to remember the second anniversary since the Hamas-led assault on 7 October 2023, as talks proceeded in Egypt over a conclusion to the war in Gaza.
The attack resulted in more than 1,200 people losing their lives and 251 others captured back to Gaza as hostages. It was the uniquely most fatal day for Jews since the Second World War.
Israel responded by launching a military offensive in Gaza which has claimed more than 67,000 people, according to the area's Hamas-run health ministry. Its figures are regarded as trustworthy by the UN and other international bodies.
"The aggressive enemies have struck forcefully, but they have not overcome us," Benjamin Netanyahu added on that day.
He also vowed to "accomplish all the goals of the war: the homecoming of all the kidnapped, the removal of the Hamas administration and the promise that Gaza will no longer present a risk to Israel".
Commemorative Ceremonies Across Israel
The government authorities rescheduled formal commemorations until October 16th - after the completion of the festive season - but ceremonies still took place across the country on Tuesday.
A commemorative event for the relatives of Israelis killed in the Hamas assault was conducted in Tel Aviv. Put together by the victims' relatives, it was aired throughout Israeli broadcast stations.
Hours earlier, a silent tribute was respected around the country.
Negotiation Talks in Egypt
Meanwhile, Israeli and Hamas negotiating teams convened in the North African Red Sea resort of the negotiation venue for a continuing round of third-party negotiations to discuss the terms of the proposal.
A prominent representative involved in the discussions revealed that an evening round of negotiations commenced at 19:00 Cairo time.
The source said the day's discussions finished without concrete outcomes, because of differences over the suggested Israeli retreat arrangements from Gaza and over safeguards Hamas wants to make certain Israel does not resume hostilities after the opening period of the arrangement.
He added that the negotiations are "tough and have not yet produce any significant progress," but pointed out that mediators are working hard to reduce the disparities between the two sides.
Key Matters in Negotiations
- A permanent truce
- The swap of the prisoners still held by Hamas for inmates from Gaza
- The pullout of troops from Gaza
- Measures for assistance deliveries
- Future management of the area
Civilian Sentiment
In the city's Hostages Square that day, young Hagar - whose brother lived through the incident on the gathering, where 378 people were murdered and dozens more were abducted by Hamas militants - explained: "No place appears as home now and until all the hostages come back not a single person will have peace of mind."
"After we see everyone home once more, we can feel relief anew. Then we can begin to heal," she added.
Outside the prime minister's official dwelling in Jerusalem, people congregated to demonstrate their support for the families of the abducted. Israel reports forty-eight stay in detention in Gaza, approximately twenty of whom are thought to be surviving.
Protester one woman stated: "It's necessary do every compromise needed for the captives to be released. But we sincerely need promises that we will be secure."
Surveys now consistently show that around seventy percent of Israeli citizens want the conflict to end in exchange for the liberation of the abducted.
Gaza Conditions
At the area of the music event, those paying respects gathered to pay their respects.
From the site, the noise of aerial bombardments and shelling could be heard just a short distance away in Gaza, where witnesses reported the heavy Israeli attacks continued.
In the urban center, bombardments were documented in the early hours of that day in the west side neighborhood, Rimal and zone districts and in the east side district of that sector, as well the settlement to the north-west.
"Once the dusk falls, the anxiety arrives with it," evacuated urban resident Emaan al-Wahidi, whose young son was died by an Israeli aerial attack last year, explained.
"We are afraid of the bombings. Throughout the evening we are lying together, clinging, particularly my little child who puts his face on me all night."
"Continuously we monitor the updates to see what happened. And I'm afraid that this halt will not be achieved and that the fighting will return to us."
Humanitarian Emergency
Al-Shifa hospital in the urban area reported it had received the corpses of several people by the daytime, including three who lost their lives in an Israeli attack in the southern al-Sabra neighbourhood.
Another medical facility in the south region of the city indicated additional victims had been transported. A person was lost his life by Israeli troops while looking for help to the south, medics reported.
