Jets Head Coach Aaron Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After New York City Shooting
New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn has stated that he has been in contact with cornerback Kris Boyd and believes the player will be OK after suffering a gunshot wound in midtown Manhattan early Sunday morning.
Glenn shared that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “upbeat” during their recent conversation.
“What reassures me, is that his mood is upbeat,” Glenn stated on Wednesday. “His wife and child, they are doing well and he is expected to recover fully.”
The coach did not know when Boyd would leave the hospital, where his condition is described as critical but stable.
“Not certain at the moment,” he added. “But I will say this, from our conversation, he felt really upbeat. And again, that puts my mind at ease, given his positive frame of mind and he’s talking that way.”
NYPD issued surveillance images earlier this week of an individual wanted in the incident involving Boyd. The reason behind the incident remains under investigation and police mentioned it’s not clear if Boyd was singled out. No one else was hurt were reported.
The attack took place just after 2am on Sunday in the area between Madison Square Garden and Times Square. Boyd, in his late twenties, was transported to a local hospital after sustaining an abdominal gunshot wound, police said. The perpetrator got away.
Glenn said Boyd has occupied his thinking “constantly” since the news broke. The coach said that Boyd and his spouse recently welcomed a baby.
“What immediately crossed my mind, he recently became a father,” Glenn noted. “I thought of his spouse, worrying about his newborn and my priority is his well-being. Those thoughts dominated my thinking.
“There’s a process to this, that I won’t detail, but I’m happy at the fact that he’s going to come out of this thing really, really well.”
Boyd did not participate during the current season, his debut year with New York, after his season was cut short due to injury on 18 August with a shoulder issue that involved surgical repair.
He signed with New York as a free agent in spring and was expected to be a significant contributor of the team’s updated special teams under Glenn and ST coordinator the special teams coach. However, he got hurt during a practice session on 2 August and was carted from the field.
Boyd has stayed involved with the squad during the entire campaign while recovering from the shoulder injury.
“He’s been a part of what we’re doing,” Glenn stated. “I mean, he comes to the games all the time. He’s fully engaged. To be one of the top special teams players in this league, he’s done a really good job of helping the other guys we have.”
Boyd, from Texas, began his career with the Vikings after getting drafted in the seventh round by Minnesota out of UT in 2019. He joined the Arizona Cardinals in 2023 and then joined Houston’s practice squad subsequently. Boyd signed a one-year contract worth $1.6m with New York in the spring.
