Forecasters are saying a chilly start to the new year, with snow likely over large parts of the UK. Those celebrating have been told to bundle up as sub-zero temperatures are forecast for New Year's Eve.

Festive Celebrations Proceed In Spite of Alerts

The Scottish capital's renowned Hogmanay celebrations are expected to take place, following last year's postponement. This comes despite weather alerts for snow in northern Scotland.

"A chilly New Year's Eve evening for those partying, so extra layers will be necessary," said the weather service.

Displays Under Open but Frosty Skies

Across the UK, the weather is likely to be suited to fireworks shows, with dry conditions and open skies. Temperatures are due to be chilly, making warm wraps essential, said forecasters.

In more northern areas, conditions will be cloudier, but this is not anticipated to impact visibility for viewing fireworks. "It won't be low cloud, mist or murk, so you will likely be able to see fireworks, just not stars," remarked one forecaster.

Extensive Weather Alerts for Friday

Heading into Friday, advisories are in place across Northern Ireland and extending from Wales, over the north-west, the West Midlands and through to London and most of the south-east of England.

• The public should to allow extra time for travel on the road.
• Delays and cancellations are likely on public transport.

The Mercury Expected to Fall Even More

As 2026 begins, it will be "cold regardless of where you are," said forecaster Simon Partridge. The weather are set to drop further as wintry showers and strong winds are expected to affect the north of the country.

About 10cm of snow is expected to have settled in some areas by Friday morning, potentially hitting 30cm on the highest roads and hills.

Medical Advisories Activated

Meanwhile, amber-level health advisories have been issued for the north-east and north-west of England. These are due to remain in place until noon on 5 January, with temperatures likely to fall to between 3C and 5C.

Authorities said this meant the weather was expected to trigger notable consequences across medical and care provision. This involves a likely increase in the mortality rate among those with health conditions or those 65 and older.

The guidance for all is clear: to celebrate the new year in good health, preparing for winter conditions is absolutely essential.
