New York Introduces Online Platform for Public to Share Immigration Footage After Arrests of 4 US Citizens
New York state attorney general has introduced a new reporting form asking locals to provide images and footage of ICE operations around New York. This action comes just a shortly after a major enforcement action rattled NYC's Chinatown, sparking widespread outcry.
American Citizens Detained During Raid
A congressional representative revealed during a midweek briefing that four US citizens were arrested and detained for "almost a full day" following the previous day's operation. Protests occurred in New York on consecutive evenings.
"Every New Yorker has the right to reside free from terror," the attorney general wrote in a statement.
"If you witnessed and recorded federal operations yesterday, I ask you to share that material with my office. We are pledged to reviewing these reports and determining any violations of law."
Form Details
The form includes options to send visual evidence of the raid, as well as a field to specify geographic details. Before submitting, individuals must mark a option that confirms that "the office may use any materials, images, or footage in a public document, including in a lawsuit or official statement."
Details of the ICE Action
The Manhattan operation, which observers say involved over fifty federal agents, occurred in a well-known neighborhood of Manhattan where fake products and other goods are regularly available in large quantities – typically to tourists.
Videos of the operation reveal numerous covered and weaponized personnel restraining and arresting a man, and forcing aside witnesses. Masses of New Yorkers followed the agents through the streets. An military-style transport was observed traveling down the city streets.
Political Response
In a Wednesday press conference held with the rights organization, Representative Goldman, a Democratic representative, said that four nationals were arrested by immigration for about 24 hours and that there were "no conditions where four American citizens should be taken for without cause." He clarified the persons were freed on Wednesday with no charges filed.
"The goal is evident here. It is not to take criminals off the street," Goldman remarked. "This represents a military-style operation to create conflict. It is purely a excuse to incite violence for this administration to bring in the armed forces to stop conflict that they initiated."
Extensive Outcry
Fury over the federal action escalated – all three mayoral candidates condemned the raid, as did NY's governor.
"Once again, the current administration opts for heavy-handed tactics that generate terror, instead of protection. It needs to cease," one mayoral candidate declared.
NYC immigrant rights groups spoke out also.
"ICE raided the neighborhood with military-style vehicles, covered personnel and tactical gear to focus on local sellers attempting to earn income. This raid had no relation to citizen protection and focused completely on intimidating residents and areas," stated the president of a rights organization.
Agency Rules
ICE policy bans the arrest of American nationals and the bureau has said it will not arrest or detain American nationals. Yet, external research has found that numerous American nationals have been held against their will by federal agents during the period of the existing leadership.
Current Situation
ICE raids have been rising in frequency in NY and nationwide recently.
A recent action in midtown Manhattan was the first known raid on an refuge facility of the present government. Demonstrations opposing ICE are widespread as are claims of aggression and inhumane treatment.
Recently, a letter submitted by advocacy organizations alleged medical neglect of pregnant women in detention centers.
