Senegal's Rising Star Camara: Starting from Aspirations to Afcon Favourites.
When I walk into the room, Lamine Camara grabs a soccer ball he clings to until after the conversation. It’s a powerful visual metaphor for a dream he has never let slip. “My sole focus was the beautiful game; my mind was set on nothing else,” states this Monaco and Senegal playmaker.
His determination and raw talent convinced teams such as Génération Foot, Metz and Monaco. However, the hardest person to convince was not a club executive or coach, it was from his dad. “He was against me to play football but it’s because he hadn’t seen me play,” explains Camara.
Overcoming Early Hurdles
Eventually, on “a special day,” Camara earned his dad's approval to pursue his career in the sport. A further barrier was his modest frame, which discouraged local club Casa Sports from offering him a contract.
However, Génération Foot – the institution that nurtured talents including Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – were convinced immediately. After Camara was named the MVP in a local competition, the scouts were “shocked” to discover he was not tied down. They moved fast. “They took me straight to the training centre. They didn’t want me from going back to Casamance,” Camara said.
An Unforgettable Season and Continental Breakthrough
That decision set him on a pathway to Europe. A defining period was 2023, “a year to remember,” which began with Camara winning the CHAN trophy. Shortly after, despite fatigue, he played in the U-20 Africa Cup, leading his nation to the title and being named player of the tournament.
Soon after, he signed for FC Metz, emulating Mané. “Settling in wasn't a problem,” says the 21-year-old. He has lived alone in Europe, a choice his relatives encourage to maintain his concentration.
Inspiration and On-Field Identity
Distractions are not really a problem for Camara, who looks up to the Belgian maestro's “humility” and superb playing qualities. He is also a huge fan of players like Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his Senegal colleague Idrissa Gana Gueye.
His ball striking and precision from dead-ball situations are notable assets. He admits he must to control his aggression, after being sent off early in his tenures at each French club. “It's a trait I carry with me!” he jokes.
Monaco, Mentors and Upcoming Goals
With his current club, he cherishes the guidance of teammates like Denis Zakaria and especially Paul Pogba. “As soon as I heard Monaco were interested in Pogba, I told myself we are really lucky,” he said.
Currently, attention is firmly on the Afcon tournament with Senegal. “We are the favourites – we can’t hide from that. If you beat England in their own country…,” he says, referencing a memorable 3-1 victory in Nottingham.
Regarding a transfer to the Premier League, he is committed to Monaco for now. “I am very comfortable here,” he affirms. However, he's frequently ribbed by icon El-Hadji Diouf about Camara's two Africa Young Player of the Year awards. He laughs, but is serious about winning the main top prize in the future.
“We are the favourites – we can’t hide from that. If you beat England in their own country… it instills confidence.”
Moving forward, this talented midfielder blends humble beginnings, unwavering focus, and grand ambitions targeting to lead Senegal to continental glory and build his own lasting legacy in the game.
