Slot Asserts He Is Secure and Has The Club's Backing Following PSV Defeat
Arne Slot acknowledged that it was understandable for doubts to be asked about his position following another heavy loss versus PSV Eindhoven.
Liverpool suffered their 9th defeat in 12 matches, representing the team's poorest run since being demoted in 1953-54.
They were dominated by the Eredivisie title holders on a punishing evening at their home ground.
“I am feeling safe, I am OK, I have got significant backing from the top,” the coach remarked.
“It would be great to turn it around and get a victory of course but when you're working as a coach and underperforming then it's typical that doubts arise.”
He noted, “I am OK with my role. This isn't the first time I've found myself in a tough spot but it's necessary that we changed our fortunes.”
Discussions with Club Management
Upon being questioned to expand on his discussions with the Liverpool hierarchy, the head coach explained:
“There's regular dialogue. They assist for the squad and to me and we have those conversations but they don’t call me every single minute of the day to say they back me.”
He mentioned, “Through standard exchanges I feel the belief. However I haven’t spoken to them after this defeat so far so we'll see.”
Familiar Issues and Squad Response
The manager lamented recurring weaknesses from his squad in their European loss, specifically wasted chances and conceding too easily.
Meanwhile, player Curtis Jones was blunter in his evaluation of the team's situation.
“I don’t have the answers. Truthfully, I do not. I’m saying that to all,” Jones remarked.
“It is not good enough. I don't need to wait to reflect. I’m past feeling anger inside. I’m at the point currently where I just don’t have the words.”
He continued, “It’s hard because I’m playing for the side I follow. I'm a supporter, and I've watched this club for years.”
“In recent memory, I haven’t experienced a Reds side enduring a spell of this nature with performances this poor.”
He finished, “But we continue to wear the crest on our chest. And as long as it is removed, we'll continue to battle.”
“Our aim is to help the side back to its rightful place, demonstrate to all again what Liverpool stands for and why people call it the best team in the planet.”
“At this moment, we're in trouble and we have to turn it around.”
