The Details Known About the Those Lost of the Bondi Terrorist Incident

At least 16 lives perished and over 40 were hurt when assailants shot at a Hanukkah gathering at Bondi Beach, an attack Australian authorities are describing as a act of terrorism.

In the latest update, authorities have confirmed the death toll is 16, including one of the alleged attackers. Furthermore, 42 wounded individuals were admitted to hospital.

The victims are still awaiting officially identified, but investigators think their ages range between 10 and 87 years of age.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.

Known as a father of five children, he was the assistant rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Family members and acquaintances described him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very kind and sociable person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How is it possible that a happy rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a family member said.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the arrival of their youngest child in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, according to his wife.

She told the moments leading up to the attack, explaining they had been standing together when the gunfire started. “He moved to protect me because he wanted to stay near me,” she recalled.

The pair were both survivors of the Holocaust, having endured unspeakable terror in their youth. They had later relocated to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

French authorities have announced that French man Dan Elkayam is a casualty.

Officially, a senior official expressed that France stood with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This low act is a new, tragic manifestation of a disgusting rise of antisemitic hatred that we must put a stop to,” the statement continued.

One Child

A young girl, aged 10 who was rushed to the a children's hospital is among those who had died, according to police reports.

One Israeli Citizen

A national of Israel was a fatality during the attack, according to multiple sources citing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people taken to hospitals, a significant number remain receiving treatment, with several in critical condition. Those hurt include two officers who responded to the attack.

A casualty is a bystander who attempted to intervene to confront one of the gunmen. Described as a local hero, he received gunshot wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. Sources state he was wounded and underwent treatment in hospital.

In a message, he recounted the scene as an “horrific scene,” but also praised the actions of those who rushed to help. He said he believed it was a “miracle” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was another casualty in the shooting. He said he heard “dozens and dozens” of gunshots.

“Initially, I believed it was rubber bullets, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I sustained a gunshot wound. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
