The acclaimed crime series Line of Duty will make a comeback for its seventh installment, announced by the broadcaster.

An upcoming six-part season written by Jed Mercurio will begin filming in Northern Ireland this spring, according to the network.

Vicky McClure expressed excitement about the return, saying she was "thrilled" about the series' return. Her co-star remarked, "How wonderful it is to know that the main trio will be back filming together next year."

The last series concluded in recent years with a finale that attracted over 17 million viewers. Speculation about a potential return have been widespread for some time, but confirmation only came this week.

Fresh Obstacles for The Team

The seventh season begins with AC-12 having been disbanded and rebranded as the Inspectorate of Police Standards, according to production details.

Steve Arnott, Vicky McClure's role, and Ted Hastings remain working to tackle misconduct within the police force.

The team's mission "faces unprecedented challenges", and in this climate, these officers are assigned their "most sensitive case so far."

New Character and Complex Case

An additional officer, Det Insp Dominic Gough, described as a charming officer celebrated for busts of organized crime, is accused of misusing his authority to become a sexual predator.

However, this investigation might serve as a intentional diversion from a larger danger still operating in the background, the teaser suggested.

Speaking about the renewal, Jed Mercurio commented: "All cast and crew are deeply thankful to the dedicated viewers."

"It's an honor to have had countless followers track the ups and downs of the unit over multiple series and we couldn't be more delighted to be returning for a seventh season."

Mercurio continued: "Corruption in this country was thought to be over while the series was not airing, so I've been compelled to use my creativity."

Cast Reactions

The Scottish actor described being part of the series as "the role of a career".

"Beyond the show's success but the people I've worked with I now call some of my closest friends."

"I can't wait to wear the uniform again and reunite with everyone," he added.

The Nottingham-born actress remarked: "Obviously I'm so excited the show is returning! Can't wait to work with Jed, Compston and Adrian again. Belfast, we'll be there shortly!"

Adrian Dunbar commented: "As we count down the AC-12 return, how exciting it is to know that the central trio will be back filming soon."

"Pleased with the announcement and anticipating those unexpected plot developments."

Series Legacy

The drama premiered in the early 2010s and became a highly successful TV dramas of the last decade, attracting guest stars such as Stephen Graham.

The BBC has not yet announced when the upcoming series will premiere.

The conclusion of season six drew the extended plot about the hunt for kingpin known as "the mysterious H" to a conclusion, and producers indicated at the time there were no intentions for additional seasons.

Nevertheless, the corporation confirmed on Tuesday that a seventh series is now being produced.
