The Latest Casual Game Mode Sparks Intense Discussions Over AI Players, Experience Points, and Queue Times
Over the weekend, the game developers introduced a fresh playlist titled Casual Breakthrough. In essence, this mode resembles the standard Breakthrough format but includes several key adjustments:
- Each team has just eight real players, with the rest filled by 32 bots.
- Actions done by real players award complete experience points, while bot actions provide reduced XP.
- Only two maps can be played: Siege of Cairo and Empire State.
- Features like Dogtags, accolades, and career stat updates have been turned off.
In short, the playlist lives up to its title: it's a laid-back take of Breakthrough. At face value, you might think there's nothing wrong, since it provides additional choices for gamers looking for alternative methods to enjoy the title. However, if video games have taught us anything, it is that you can't please everyone. In other words, a lot of Battlefield 6 fans are upset.
Community Responses: Anger to Support
"People want real players. Don't repeat the errors of your competitors," states one reply to the official announcement. "Truly disappointing concept," comments a different user. Meanwhile, on the Battlefield subreddit, a player remarks, "I have no idea where we are going with this title," while someone else lists all the issues they consider to be broken in the game: "Resolve glitches, fix drone glitch, fix IVF rockets, fix [the] bloom after sprinting bug, improve hit detection. We do not require this AI-heavy playlist."
On the other hand, for every complaint, there are players sharing how much they're liking the recent addition. "It's enjoyable to warm up, real players prevent it from being a total farmfest but it's quite laid-back," says a forum post. "The community doesn't understand that there are gamers who have lives and don't play this title all the time. Let them strike a balance," adds a different comment. One reply on Twitter explains that as they're "a parent gamer with busy schedules, this is perfect for me," and another praises the mode for "avoiding intense competition."
Constructive Concerns and Player Input
Despite the support, there are valid points to criticize Casual Breakthrough. A few folks have highlighted that it could increase queue times even longer for different playlists due to the sheer number of playlists in the game already. On a similar note, some areas often face AI-filled matches in the existing playlists. It also seems somewhat counterintuitive that the mode won't start without a minimum number of human gamers, despite it primarily centers on combat against bots.
Lastly, one of the biggest grievances is that Battlefield Portal was promised to provide complete rewards, including AI matches, but that got canned when they attempted to eliminate bot farms from the mode. Thus this new playlist feels like the community meeting them in the middle, according to a Reddit comment. Another describes this addition as the devs "dropping the ball significantly, I had so much fun in the initial release, why did they feel the need to change it?"
Looking Ahead: Will Changes Occur?
Should Battlefield Studios has demonstrated something to date with Battlefield 6, it is that they're listening and acting on player input. Tasks being too difficult got fixed rapidly, as did the specific battle pass objectives. Chances are that, should analytics shows this new playlist is underperforming to their standards, they won't be shy to make further modifications.
