The Red Devils Set to Sign German Forward Lea Schüller away from Bayern Munich
Manchester United are on the verge of sealing the deal for prolific German striker Lea Schüller in a permanent move from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.
A Major Acquisition for the WSL Side
The forward, with half a year remaining on her contract, has been a consistent goalscorer for both club and country. She has scored more than 100 goals for the German giants and found the net 54 times in 82 caps for her country. Her arrival will be seen as a major signing for the WSL team.
Her exit from Bayern was expected after she appeared to be fighting back tears while applauding the German club’s supporters following a victory over Bayer Leverkusen this month.
Reports in December that the German women's top flight was losing one of its leading strikers. According to multiple sources, all the paperwork for the transfer have now been completed.
Consistent Goal Threat to Strengthen the Attack
The 28-year-old’s signing should represent a major uplift to the team's attacking options. Schüller has been remarkably reliable with her finishing in the Bundesliga.
- For seven consecutive seasons, up to and including the most recent campaign, she achieved at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
- She claimed the top scorer award in 2021-22 season with 16 goals.
Building Momentum at Old Trafford
The acquisition of the German international comes at a time when the club appear to be building positive momentum.
Recent performances feature qualifying for the European knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a win in the League Cup quarter-finals.
Off the pitch, the mid-season window has seen further activity:
- The signing of Swedish right-back Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
- The new deal for Japan playmaker Hinata Miyazawa, who has become fan favourite since joining in 2023.
On Miyazawa’s new deal, a senior figure stated: “Miyazawa is now a critical component to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and technical ability enables her and the team to control and dictate play from the middle of the park.”
Lundkvist, who has joined from a club in the American league, said: “You can feel how much they [United] have grown in the last few years, playing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and now featuring in the Champions League.”
