Balloons carrying thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was forced to close for hours when multiple of them drifted across the national airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The airport closure led to 30 flight cancellations affecting six thousand travelers, with airport representatives alerting that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Border security stated that 25 meteorological balloons were detected entering Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with a pair of them ending up directly over the main terminal.
Approximately 14 of the weather balloons deployed throughout the weekend floated over the Vilnius area, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and close to the frontier with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
No fewer than 11 balloons transporting 18,000 packs of illegal tobacco products have been collected so far, though this number could rise, according to customs agents.
International Illegal Trade
While creating issues, officials emphasized that "Balloons with contraband - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are common occurrences in the Baltic region and Poland."
So far this year, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were noted during the prior year.
Cross-Border Effects
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has registered in excess of one hundred incidents in which contraband was flown from its neighbor using the balloons.
Criminal Methodology
Regarding inquiries concerning why smugglers utilize a technique that proves especially affected by weather factors rather than simpler to operate drones, representatives elaborated that "Weather devices are rudimentary tools used by illegal traders - they are cheaper than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Representatives further stated that "Our services' aim is to capture the greatest possible volumes of smuggled items and to detain organisers and perpetrators so that such operations become economically unsustainable and do not pose risk to passenger aircraft."
European Tensions
Such border infiltrations occur during a time of heightened tension in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have caused air traffic disruption across the continent.
Similar occurrences in adjacent nations have caused EU officials to accelerate discussions about improving airspace protection throughout the region.
